Dr. Eugene Lipov

Client since 2011

It started with an urgent request from my healthcare client to optimize his Youtube channel. Dr. Eugene Lipov is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain physician, but the extensive design and marketing work that has been provided on Dr. Lipov’s behalf is rooted in his standing as a pioneer in the treatment of post-traumatic stress (PTS). While he is not a psychiatrist, his patient care and advocacy are relevant to (both) the medical and mental health realms.

Many years ago, Dr. Eugene Lipov had theory about the use of a procedure called “stellate ganglion block” (SGB) as treatment to alleviate symptoms related to post-traumatic stress. Although the procedure is FDA-approved as a protocol for treating other ailments, and has been since the 1950s, the medical establishment has been slow to accept the mounting evidence of its efficacy. It is performed with an injection of medication into the bottom of the front side of the neck, into a cluster of nerves — the stellate ganglion. More than 85% of PTS survivors feel immediate relief and some require a second block, months or years later. Since Dr. Lipov first performed — and documented — SGB for PTS in 2006, the procedure has evolved.

When he’s not caring for patients, he makes frequent media appearances and, otherwise, speaks publicly about a relatively new, science-based understanding of severe psychological trauma, one that suggests that the mental and emotional struggles of post-traumatic stress (PTS) survivors are actually the result of a biological change — observable, measurable, and treatable. Dr. Lipov has testified on PTSD treatment before the U.S. House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs (2010). In collaboration with neuroscientists, he has become one of the world’s leading authority on the physiology of PTS. His studies are widely published in peer-reviewed medical journals.

Dr. Lipov has become an ardent advocate for changing the familiar label/diagnosis of the condition to be spoken and thought of as an “injury,” not a “disorder” — PTSI vs. PTSD.

Mark was introduced to Dr. Lipov towards the end of March 2023, by a mutual colleague who handles his publicity. Already engaged in a busy press junket for his new book, The Invisible Machine, released April 11, 2023, Dr. Lipov had created a new Youtube channel to support its marketing and, for what is essentially, a representation of his life’s work. He had uploaded 53 videos to the channel — all were insufficiently titled (from an SEO perspective) and, virtually, none had a summary description.

During the initial conversation, Dr. Lipov expressed that optimizing the Youtube channel needed to be optimized “yesterday.” The subsequent conversation resulted in the hiring, at which time Mark promised it would be completed in three days.

Ultimately, optimizing the Youtube channel took four days. Nevertheless, Dr. Lipov was impressed and the process proved to be valuable for what was to come, in the very near future.

The most important item of optimizing any video is the title, so making efficient use of the 100 characters that are allowed is essential. The imminent book release and associated media might result in a surge of online queries, so Mark proceeded accordingly. Among the tasks:

  • (naturally) watched each of the 53 videos;
  • identified a set of relevant keywords;
  • researched the client’s career and, depending on the video, explored deeper for context;
  • distilled information from two different publicity agencies, to edit into each video’s description;
  • created an on-brand video thumbnail template, used for each upload;
  • began organizing video content into themed playlists.

The next few weeks saw more of the same as new video footage surrounding the book release emerged. In sum, the process resulted in a de facto education on the work of his client.
