“Ko-Ho-Jo with Hardwood,” David McCarthy

David McCarthy creates vibrantly colorful, expertly composed constructions. His work combines carved and inlaid wood, organic materials, and woven elements into compositions reminiscent of the abstract expressionist images of Jean Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee. His work has been patronized by an impressive list of buyers and exhibitors, including the Whitney Museum, the White House, and the Cultural Minister of the Peoples Republic of China.

Good condition, no key, works

It is a combination of a weight scale and astrology or fortune telling reader. The weighing platform is marked with “Watling Scale Co. Chicago” and is metal. Signage on the machine is porcelain.

Top front of the machine shows an astrology chart with levers for each astrological sign. To the right of the astrology chart is a coin slot. If wanting your weight and horoscope you would deposit 10 cents into the machine and pull the lever down above your astrological sign. If just wanting your weight you can deposit a penny into the respective slot on the machine. Back of the machine has a tag that reads “Beaver Novelty Co. Inc.” These machines were found in every Woolworths store across the nation from the 1930s to the 1960s.

In addition to her skill in glass arts, Elin has experience in metal lathe and milling machine operations, steel fabrication, including MIG and TIG welding, and wood carving and construction. She has also used factory production methods to create multiple parts for sculpture and public art. To date, she has created large scale glass artwork in the public realm for two libraries, a park, a civic center, two medical centers, and an outdoor mall.
